All About Childhood Illnesses

without comments

The most critical age in the life of a person is his/her childhood, especially the first few years after birth. It is the time when child is not immune to many diseases, and thus has a higher chance of falling prey to many diseases. The child is weak and is unable to fight off disease which causes germs, and thus becomes sick very easily. Many childhood diseases become very dangerous very quickly, and due to the weak immune system of the child, the speed at which the disease develops is very fast.

Many parents worry about their children for this very reason and their worries are not wrong as this is indeed a critical age for children, and therefore they demand high levels of care and attention. Children with some sort of complicated births or who are weak at birth are at a higher risk of falling prey to childhood diseases than normal children and thus demand even more care and attention.

However, this should not worry the parents too much as most children get through their early stages without getting any serious illnesses.

Nevertheless, every parent should always be prepared to deal with any kind of illness and should always be vigilant. Any signs of disease should not be treated lightly, and proper medical examination should be conducted where necessary to get hold of diseases before it become dangerous.

Pre-existing Illnesses Cover

without comments

When an expert advises to buy health insurance early in age, one of the reasons behind it is to avoid the pre existing illnesses clause.

As one grows older there is greater tendency to acquire age related and lifestyle related illnesses. Any such illnesses one has before taking health insurance are not covered by the health insurance policy for a long time. Fact is that many people avoid taking health insurance because they have a pre-existing condition.

Pre existing illnesses are the diseases, medical conditions or symptoms of them that exist prior to purchase of health insurance the first time. In most insurance companies there is a long waiting period before these illnesses can be covered under health insurance. The waiting period may vary from 2-5 years depending upon the illness and the insurance company norms.

So, if, for example, you have diabetes before you buy health insurance, your hospitalization due to any medical condition arising from your being diabetic will not be covered during the waiting period of pre-existing illnesses.

At the time of taking health insurance, it is very important that you disclose any preexisting medical condition or medical facts about you in your knowledge.

If you don’t, it may hamper future claims that may arise. You may be denied claims not just for the pre existing conditions but other illnesses or injuries for deliberately hiding relevant information at the time of taking the policy.

without comments

Campylobacter is one of the most common causes of food poisoning, and if you contract Campylobacter on holiday, you are likely to suffer symptoms of diarrhoea, stomach cramps and fever within two to five days of exposure to the organism.

You may also have blood in diarrhoea, and the illness typically lasts for one week. Like Salmonella, if Campylobacter spreads to the blood stream, it can cause serious, life-threatening infection, particularly among people with weakened immune systems, young children and older people.

Campylobacter normally clears up without any specific treatment, although it is particularly unpleasant if you contract the illness on holiday. Patients should drink plenty of fluids for as long as diarrhoea lasts, and in severe cases a doctor may prescribe antibiotics, which will shorten the duration of symptoms.

Depending on the severity of your Campylobacter illness, your doctor will decide whether antibiotics are necessary or not.

Most holidaymakers who contract Campylobacter recover within two to five days, although recovery can take as long as ten days, without any further complications. It is possible to suffer arthritis following Campylobacter infection, or a rare disease which affects the nerves of the body, beginning several weeks after diarrhoea. Known as Guillan-Barr syndrome, this may occur when a person´s immune system attacks the body´s own nerves, and can result in urgent medical treatment.

Common Iguana Illnesses

without comments

An iguana takes a long time to get sick and a long time to get well. In the wild sick and weak animals have to hide their illness or injury. Any sign of weakness will attract a predator and because of this instinctive tendency it is hard to tell when an animal is sick until it is too late.

The most effective tool for knowing when your iguana may have a problem is by paying attention to anything you feel is different from what your iguana normally does. If you think something is wrong then don’t wait to take your iguana to the vet. Most iguanas that are seen by vets are gravely ill and it is often irreversible.

Signs of a sick iguana:

> Reduced eating
> Change from daily routine
> Discharge from mouth, nose or vent.
> Stool changes
> slight or dramatic limping
> Swollen limbs or trunk
> Muscle weakness, tremors or paralyses
> Changes in sleeping, eating, body colour, alertness, weight, appearance and energy levels.

Metabolic Bone Disease

75% Of iguanas seen by vets are there for metabolic bone disease and nearly all iguanas seen are calcium deficient.

Respiratory Problems

Causes:
> Habitat that is excessively humid and not enough ventilation. Pathogens breed and can cause respiratory infections.
> Excessively dry habitat. The mucous membranes can dry and your iguana can easily get infections
> Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures
